What is ground microphone surveying?
Ground microphone surveying places a sensitive listening device directly on the ground or pavement and sweeps it across the suspected pipe route. As the operator moves over the leak, the amplified sound peaks — localising the leak to a small surface area for confirmation or correlation.
How it works
- 1A weighted ground microphone is placed along the pipe route.
- 2The operator sweeps the surface listening for the sound peak.
- 3Amplitude readings localise the loudest point.
- 4The spot is confirmed with correlation or contact listening.
Advantages
Pinpoints from the surface
Works on lawns, pavement and concrete
Confirms correlation results
Effective on irrigation and service lines

Ground Microphone — FAQs
Can you survey across my lawn or driveway?
Yes — ground microphones work on grass, soil, pavement and concrete to localise a buried leak from the surface.
Is this the same as correlation?
It complements it: correlation calculates the position between two points, and the ground microphone confirms it precisely on the surface.
