Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a sophisticated geophysical imaging technique that uses high-frequency radio waves to create cross-sectional profiles of subsurface conditions. The technology works by transmitting electromagnetic pulses into the ground or through structural concrete and measuring the reflections that bounce back from buried objects, changes in material density, and moisture-laden soil.

In the context of leak detection, GPR serves two primary functions. First, it maps the precise location of buried pipes, conduits, and utilities before any excavation or coring begins — preventing costly and dangerous utility strikes. Second, it can detect areas of saturated soil surrounding a leaking pipe, as water changes the dielectric properties of the ground and creates a distinct radar signature. This makes GPR particularly valuable for locating leaks in underground water mains, irrigation lines, and sewer laterals where the surface gives no indication of the problem below.
