Conductive Mesh Testing for Geomembranes
Electrical method for testing the integrity of geomembrane liners in ponds, reservoirs, and green roof systems using conductive grid arrays.
How Conductive Mesh Testing for Geomembranes Works
Conductive mesh testing involves placing a conductive grid array over a geomembrane liner and applying a low-voltage electrical current. The conductive grid creates a known electrical potential across the liner surface. Any breach in the geomembrane — from a puncture, seam failure, or material defect — creates a localised electrical potential change that is detected by the instrumentation. The technician uses a handheld probe to map the electrical field and identify the exact location of each breach. This method is commonly used for new liner quality assurance, detecting installation damage before the liner is covered with soil or water. It is also used for in-service liner leakage location on ponds, reservoirs, and green roof systems.
Applications in BC
- New geomembrane liner quality assurance testing
- Green roof waterproofing membrane integrity verification
- Pond and reservoir liner leak detection
- Landfill liner and cap system integrity testing
- Decorative pond and water feature liner testing
Advantages
- Detects damage invisible to visual inspection
- Tests 100% of liner surface area
- Identifies exact breach location for repair
- Works before and after covering with soil or water
- Documented results for warranty compliance
Limitations
- Requires access to the liner surface
- Time-consuming for very large areas
- Conductive mesh material required for testing
- Weather-dependent — wet conditions affect readings
