Conductivity / Resistivity Testing

Measurement of electrical conductivity of water to trace migration paths and identify ground water sources in below-grade structures.

How Conductivity / Resistivity Testing Works

Conductivity and resistivity testing measures the electrical conductivity of water samples to trace migration paths and identify water sources. Water from different sources (groundwater, municipal supply, rainwater, plumbing system water) has different dissolved mineral content and therefore different electrical conductivity characteristics. By measuring conductivity at multiple points, we can trace water migration paths through soil and structures. This method is particularly useful for identifying the entry point of groundwater in below-grade structures, tracing water migration through concrete slabs, and distinguishing between different water sources in complex leak scenarios. Conductivity testing is often used in conjunction with dye testing for comprehensive water path tracing.

Applications in BC

  • Groundwater vs. plumbing leak identification in basements
  • Water migration path tracing through concrete structures
  • Seawater intrusion assessment in coastal BC properties
  • Leak source identification in multi-source scenarios
  • Below-grade waterproofing failure analysis

Advantages

  • Simple, fast, and low-cost screening method
  • Portable meters provide instant readings
  • Can distinguish between multiple water sources
  • Effective for tracing migration paths
  • No damage to building materials

Limitations

  • Requires water sample at each test point
  • Interpretation requires professional experience
  • Water source conductivity can vary over time
  • Less effective when water sources have similar conductivity

Equipment Used

  • Hanna HI98331 conductivity meter
  • Extech EC400 conductivity probe
  • Myron L Ultrameter conductivity meter
  • Thermo Scientific Orion Star meter
  • Oakton PCSTestr 35
