How Correlating Noise Loggers Works
Correlating noise loggers combine the continuous monitoring capability of acoustic loggers with the precise location capability of leak noise correlators. Small, battery-powered loggers are installed temporarily or permanently on hydrants, valves, and pipe fittings throughout a water distribution system. During quiet nighttime hours (typically 2:00-4:00 AM), the loggers listen for leak sounds. When a potential leak is detected, the loggers wake up, record the acoustic data with precise GPS time-stamping, and transmit the data to a central processing platform. The correlation algorithm then calculates the leak position. This technology enables simultaneous surveillance of entire network zones with a single deployment.
