Standpipe and Fire Riser Leak Testing

Pressure testing of standpipe systems and fire risers to verify integrity and identify leaks in fire protection systems.

How Standpipe and Fire Riser Leak Testing Works

Standpipe and fire riser leak testing is a specialized service for verifying the integrity of fire protection water supply systems in multi-storey buildings. The standpipe system is isolated, filled with water, and pressurized to the required test pressure (typically 200 psi or 1.5 times the system working pressure). The pressure is monitored over a 2-hour test period per NFPA 25 requirements. A pressure drop indicates a leak in the system. The leak can be localized by isolating sections of the standpipe and re-testing. Once the general area is identified, acoustic listening and tracer gas methods are used to pinpoint the exact leak location. This testing is essential for NFPA 25 compliance in BC commercial and strata buildings.

Applications in BC

  • NFPA 25 standpipe system leak testing in BC high-rises
  • Fire riser integrity verification for insurance compliance
  • Combined standpipe and sprinkler system leak detection
  • Post-repair verification of fire system integrity
  • Annual fire protection system documentation for insurance

Advantages

  • Ensures fire protection system readiness
  • Meets NFPA 25 testing requirements
  • Identifies system leaks before emergency
  • Sectional isolation for leak localization
  • Documented results for compliance

Limitations

  • Requires system shut-down during testing
  • Building fire protection may need alternative measures
  • High test pressures require safety precautions
  • Complex testing procedure for tall buildings

Equipment Used

  • Hydro-Test HP-600 high-pressure test pump
  • Watts precision pressure gauge with data logging
  • NFPA 25 test forms and documentation
  • Sectional isolation valves and test plugs
  • Digital chart recorder for pressure trend
