How Thermal Radiant Loop Mapping Works
Thermal radiant loop mapping is a specialized application of infrared thermography for diagnosing and locating leaks in hydronic radiant floor heating systems. After the heating system has been operating for a sufficient period (typically 30-60 minutes), a thermal imaging survey is conducted systematically across the entire floor surface. The thermal images reveal the distribution pattern of the heating loops, including areas where flow is restricted, where the loop terminates, and most importantly, where hot water is escaping from a leak — creating a distinct, localized warm spot on the floor surface. This method is highly effective for locating leaks in both suspended and slab-embedded radiant systems, as the escaping hot water creates a unique thermal signature that is clearly distinguishable from the normal loop pattern.
