How Ultrasonic Leak Detection Works
Ultrasonic leak detection uses specialized microphones that detect high-frequency sound waves (typically 20-100 kHz) generated by gas or liquid escaping through small openings under pressure. These frequencies are above the range of human hearing and above most background noise, making ultrasonic detection highly selective. The ultrasonic signal is strongest at the leak source and diminishes with distance, allowing technicians to pinpoint the exact location. This method is particularly effective for compressed air systems, steam traps, and gas systems where the escaping medium generates strong ultrasonic signatures. The high directionality of ultrasonic sensors allows precise location even in noisy industrial environments.
