Running Toilet — Internal Leak Detection
A running toilet can waste 200+ litres per day and is the most common source of residential water waste in BC. Silent flapper leaks are often undetected for months.
Possible Causes
- •Failed or misaligned flapper allowing water to leak into bowl
- •Overflow tube setting too high causing continuous flow
- •Fill valve not shutting off completely at proper level
- •Worn or stuck flush valve seat preventing seal
- •Handle or chain sticking keeping flapper open
Recommended Steps
- 1Remove tank lid and check water level — should be 1 inch below overflow tube
- 2Add food coloring to tank water — if color appears in bowl without flushing, flapper is leaking
- 3Check flapper condition — replace if cracked or warped
- 4Adjust fill valve height if water is flowing into overflow tube
- 5Replace flapper annually as preventive maintenance
