Common Water Issue in BC
Water Meter Rapidly Spinning — Confirmed Major Leak
A water meter that spins rapidly when no water is being used indicates a major leak between the meter and your property. Call for emergency leak detection immediately.
Possible Causes
- •Burst water main or service line between meter and building
- •Catastrophic pipe failure in basement or crawlspace
- •Failed appliance supply line gushing water
- •Running toilet with silent flapper (less flow, not rapid)
- •Open bypass or drain valve in plumbing system
Recommended Steps
- 1Shut off main water shut-off valve immediately
- 2Check if meter stops spinning — if yes, leak is inside building
- 3If meter continues spinning, leak is between meter and building — underground
- 4Check for visible water in basement, crawlspace, or along pipe routes
- 5Call 604-239-9934 for emergency leak detection — every minute counts
