Water Meter Rapidly Spinning — Confirmed Major Leak

A water meter that spins rapidly when no water is being used indicates a major leak between the meter and your property. Call for emergency leak detection immediately.

Possible Causes

  • Burst water main or service line between meter and building
  • Catastrophic pipe failure in basement or crawlspace
  • Failed appliance supply line gushing water
  • Running toilet with silent flapper (less flow, not rapid)
  • Open bypass or drain valve in plumbing system

Recommended Steps

  • 1Shut off main water shut-off valve immediately
  • 2Check if meter stops spinning — if yes, leak is inside building
  • 3If meter continues spinning, leak is between meter and building — underground
  • 4Check for visible water in basement, crawlspace, or along pipe routes
  • 5Call 604-239-9934 for emergency leak detection — every minute counts
