What is acoustic leak detection?

Acoustic leak detection uses highly sensitive ground microphones, listening discs and digital correlators to hear the sound a pressurised pipe makes as water escapes. It is the gold standard for underground supply lines, slab leaks and buried services where the leak cannot be seen, letting us locate the source without excavation.

How our acoustic detection process works

  1. 1We isolate the suspect line and pressurise it where possible.
  2. 2Ground microphones and contact sensors sweep the area to find the loudest leak sound.
  3. 3A leak-noise correlator measures the sound's arrival time at two sensors to calculate the exact position along the pipe.
  4. 4We mark the surface directly above the leak for a minimal, targeted dig or break-out.

Signs you may need acoustic detection

Wet patches in a yard, driveway or parkade
Pressure loss on a buried service line

What you receive

Marked leak position on the ground or slab
Correlation distance measurements
Photo documentation of the located area

Technology we use

Acoustic Detection — frequently asked questions

Can you find a leak under concrete?

Yes. Acoustic detection and correlation are specifically suited to slab and buried-line leaks, allowing us to pinpoint the spot before any concrete is cut.

Does the pipe need to be running?

For acoustic work the line ideally holds pressure so the leak makes sound. Where a line cannot be pressurised, we switch to tracer gas instead.
