Sonar Hydrophone Leak Detection in British Columbia
Sonar hydrophone technology uses underwater acoustic sensors to detect leaks in buried or submerged pipes where the leak sound is transmitted through a column of water rather than through the pipe wall or surrounding soil. The hydrophone is inserted into the water column through a hydrant, standpipe
About Sonar Hydrophone
Sonar hydrophone technology uses underwater acoustic sensors to detect leaks in buried or submerged pipes where the leak sound is transmitted through a column of water rather than through the pipe wall or surrounding soil.
The hydrophone is inserted into the water column through a hydrant, standpipe, or direct tap, and listens for the acoustic signature of water escaping from the pipe.
This method is exceptionally sensitive for large-diameter water mains and pipes where standard ground-surface acoustic methods may not be effective due to depth or pipe material characteristics.
Best For
- Large-diameter transmission water mains
- Deep-buried municipal water lines
- Plastic pipe leak detection in distribution systems
- Pre-commissioning leak testing of new pipelines
- Reservoir and tank leak location
Key Benefits
- Extremely sensitive — detects leaks in large-diameter and deep pipes
- Bypasses signal loss from soil and pavement cover
- Effective on plastic pipes that dampen standard acoustic transmission
- Can survey long pipe sections from a single insertion point
- Works in high-flow conditions where other methods struggle
- Ideal for pre-commissioning leak verification on new mains
