About This Service

Rebar mapping with GPR documents the position, spacing and depth of reinforcing steel in existing concrete structures — critical information for rehabilitation engineers, structural repairs and capacity assessments. When as-built drawings are unavailable or unreliable, GPR produces the reinforcement map that allows safe structural interventions, crack repair planning and load assessments.

How GPR Works for This Application

  1. 1

We set up a grid on the concrete surface aligned with the likely rebar layout.

  2. 2

GPR scans both along and perpendicular to the reinforcement direction.

  3. 3

Rebar appears as regular parabolic reflections; we measure spacing, depth and orientation.

  4. 4

Results are compiled into a reinforcement map drawn to scale.

  5. 5

A report notes cover depth at multiple points, identifying areas of low cover that may cause delamination or spalling.

Common Use Cases

Structural rehabilitation projects lacking as-built drawings
Crack repair and carbonation depth assessment
Core drilling adjacent to reinforcement for forensic testing
Corrosion investigation — mapping rebar density in affected zones
Capacity assessments for change-of-use or loading changes

What You Receive

  • Scaled reinforcement plan or overlay on provided drawings
  • Rebar spacing, orientation and depth documentation
  • Cover depth measurements at specified points
  • GPR scan images for engineering records
  • Advisory on areas of concern (low cover, congestion)

Frequently asked questions

Can GPR tell if rebar is corroded?

GPR images rebar position and spacing reliably; it cannot directly assess corrosion, though loss of a rebar reflection where one is expected can suggest severe section loss.

Can you distinguish single from double-mat reinforcing?

In thinner slabs we resolve two-layer mats well. In very heavily reinforced sections signal attenuation may limit resolution of deeper layers.

Do you provide CAD drawings?

Yes, on request. We provide scan data overlaid on your supplied drawings, or produce a scaled sketch for structures where no drawing exists.
