Professional Sewer & Drain Line Locating Across BC

Sewer and drain lines are among the most difficult utilities to locate because they are typically non-metallic (PVC, ABS, or clay) and flow under gravity rather than pressure. Conventional electromagnetic locating methods do not work on non-conductive sewer pipes. We use a combination of CCTV camera inspection with an integrated sonde transmitter that is pushed through the pipe, broadcasting a traceable signal to the surface receiver. This method provides continuous tracking of the pipe route and depth. For larger diameter sewers and storm drains, we deploy a crawler camera with a high-power sonde for tracing depths exceeding 3 metres. The sonde tracking provides real-time GPS coordinates of the pipe alignment, and the CCTV footage documents pipe condition at every point.

Detection Technologies Used

How It Works

1

Access through cleanout, manhole, or building drain connection

2

CCTV camera with sonde transmitter deployment through the pipe

3

Surface sonde receiver tracking for continuous alignment and depth data

4

GPS data collection and CCTV documentation review

Frequently Asked Questions

What size pipes can be sonde-traced?

Sonde transmitters are available for pipes from 50 mm (2 inch) to 300 mm (12 inch) diameter. Larger pipes may require crawler-mounted sondes or alternative GPR-based tracing.

Is sewer line locating included in a standard utility locate?

Standard private utility locates typically cover water, gas, electrical, and telecom. Sewer and drain locating requires specialized CCTV and sonde equipment and is usually scoped separately.

Key Benefits

  • Locates non-metallic sewer and drain pipes that EM methods miss
  • CCTV footage provides simultaneous pipe condition assessment
  • Sonde tracking provides continuous depth and alignment data
  • Documents blockages, breaks, and root intrusion during location survey
  • GPS coordinates for excavation targeting
