Where Pool Leaks Occur

Pool Shell Cracks

Concrete, fibreglass or vinyl liner cracks located by dye testing with the pool full.

Main Drain & Fittings

Failed gaskets and fitting connections at main drains, returns and skimmers.

Underground Return Lines

Buried PVC and CPVC return lines located by pressure testing and acoustic or tracer gas detection.

Suction Lines

Pump suction plumbing leaks traced from the skimmer to the equipment pad.

Equipment Pad Plumbing

Above-grade pump, filter and heater plumbing connections inspected for drips and weeps.

Skimmer Bodies

Skimmer faceplate and body separations from the pool wall — a common leak source in older pools.

The Detection Process

  1. 1

Bucket test review — confirm the loss rate exceeds evaporation.

  2. 2

Pump-on / pump-off test — isolates whether the leak is in the shell or the pressurised plumbing.

  3. 3

Dye testing at all fittings, drains, skimmers and visible shell cracks to locate shell entry points.

  4. 4

Pressure testing of return and suction lines — confirms buried plumbing integrity.

  5. 5

Acoustic or tracer gas detection for buried line leaks — locates the breach without excavation.

  6. 6

Written report with all located leak sources and repair recommendations for your pool contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Can you find a pool leak without draining the pool?

In most cases, yes. Dye testing, pump-on/pump-off testing and pressure testing of plumbing lines locate most pool leaks with the pool full. We drain only when the suspected breach is at the very bottom of the shell and cannot be accessed otherwise.

How do I confirm I have a leak and not evaporation?

The bucket test: place a bucket filled to pool water level on a step. Mark both levels. After 24 hours with the pump off — if the pool dropped more than the bucket, you have a leak. Evaporation affects both equally.

The pool only loses water with the pump running. What does that mean?

Loss during pump operation (and not at rest) typically indicates a pressurised return line leak or an equipment fitting leak — not a shell crack. We test return lines under pressure to confirm.

My pool deck is sinking around the pool edge — is it related?

Possibly. A pool shell or plumbing leak that saturates the surrounding soil can cause subsoil erosion and deck subsidence. We assess the pool and the surrounding conditions as part of the inspection.
