About This Service

Storm sewers and drainage pipes carry large volumes of water and are not pressurised — making them silent and very difficult to detect with standard acoustic methods alone. We use CCTV camera inspection, tracer gas and dye testing to locate cracks, root intrusion, joint failures and flow blockages in buried storm and drainage systems without excavating the entire run.

Signs You May Have This Leak

Recurring surface water pooling after rain in unexpected locations
Erosion or sinkhole formation along a drain route
Flooding in areas that should drain well
Tree root invasion causing slow drainage or backups
Odours from drain lines that typically carry only clean water

Detection Process

  1. 1

We access the drain system from clean-out or manhole points.

  2. 2

A CCTV camera travels the line, recording cracks, joint failures, root intrusion and offsets.

  3. 3

A sonde locator tracks the camera position from the surface, marking defect locations.

  4. 4

Tracer gas or dye confirms whether water is escaping the line at identified defects.

  5. 5

We produce a condition report with footage, defect locations and depth estimates.

What You Receive

  • Recorded CCTV footage of the line condition
  • Surface-marked defect positions
  • Tracer gas or dye confirmation of leak points
  • Drain condition report with repair priority
  • Recommendations for relining, patching or replacement

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to excavate to inspect a storm drain?

No — CCTV inspection travels the pipe from an access point and maps its condition without excavation. We only dig if a repair is needed, and we tell you exactly where.

Can you inspect large-diameter storm culverts?

Yes. Our CCTV equipment scales to a range of pipe diameters. For very large culverts, we assess the appropriate inspection approach.

What is the most common storm drain failure in BC?

Root intrusion, joint separation due to settlement, and concrete deterioration in older clay or concrete pipes. Newer plastic pipe systems fail at joints and connections.
