What is acoustic leak detection?
Acoustic leak detection uses ground microphones and listening discs amplified far beyond human hearing to detect the distinctive hiss and rush of pressurised water escaping a pipe. It is the foundational technology for buried and slab leaks, where the leak can be heard long before it can be seen.
How it works
- 1We pressurise the suspect line where possible.
- 2Ground microphones and contact sensors sweep the area.
- 3Electronic filtering isolates the leak frequency from background noise.
- 4The loudest point indicates the position directly above the leak.
Advantages
Finds buried and slab leaks
No excavation to locate
Works on metal and many plastic lines

Acoustic Listening — FAQs
How can you hear a leak underground?
Highly sensitive microphones and electronic filtering amplify and isolate the leak's sound from the surface, even several feet down.
Does background noise interfere?
We use frequency filtering and often work during quieter periods to separate the leak signal from ambient noise.
