What is sonar & hydrophone detection?
For large-diameter water mains and submerged or charged lines that surface acoustics struggle with, hydrophone-based sonar sensors listen from inside or along the water column itself. By detecting the leak's acoustic signature within the flow, these advanced sensors locate leaks on transmission mains and difficult buried lines with exceptional reach.
How it works
- 1A hydrophone sensor couples to the water column in the main.
- 2It detects the in-pipe acoustic signature of a leak.
- 3Signal analysis localises the leak along the line.
- 4Results are confirmed and marked for excavation.
Advantages
Reaches large-diameter and transmission mains
Works where surface acoustics are weak
Long detection range in-pipe
Suited to municipal and industrial mains
Where we use it

Sonar / Hydrophone — FAQs
What is a hydrophone used for?
A hydrophone listens within the water itself, making it effective on large mains and submerged lines where surface microphones lose the signal.
Is this for big pipes only?
It is most valuable on large-diameter and transmission mains, complementing standard acoustics on smaller lines.
